About Hannah
Hannah is AI. She is not a person.
Hannah is a sparrow in the app's pictures and an AI in its words.
What she is
Hannah is the companion in Gently. She is built on Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. She is named for the woman in 1 Samuel who prayed with her lips moving and no sound, and was heard. You can give her another name in Settings.
She is not a pastor, a counselor, or a doctor, and she will not pretend to be one. She never says she is human.
What she does
- She finds a verse and shows it with its reference. Every verse comes from the Berean Standard Bible, placed in her reply by our server, word for word. The AI never writes verse text itself.
- She brings the morning devotional and sits up with you at night.
- She remembers the people you pray for, in short notes kept on your phone. In Settings, under Yours, "See what Hannah remembers" shows every note in plain words, and you can remove any of them.
What she never does
- Claim to be human.
- Tell you what a verse means. She shows it, and the reading is yours.
- Give medical, legal, or financial advice.
- Tell you how you felt in the past.
- Talk about anyone else who uses Gently.
She tells you, and keeps telling you
Every conversation starts with a line that says she is AI. If a conversation goes on, she says it again at least every three hours. Before your first message, she asks whether you are happy for your words to go to the AI model, and nothing is sent until you choose Continue.
Talking to her longer earns nothing, and putting the phone down costs nothing.
If you are in crisis
If a message talks about hurting yourself or ending your life, Hannah shows a crisis card first, before any other reply. It says:
In crisis? Call or text 988. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is open all day and night. Or text HOME to 741741 to reach Crisis Text Line.
The card has buttons to call 988, text 988, or text HOME to 741741. "In crisis? Call 988" also sits on every prayer screen and every chat screen.
The laws behind this page
California SB 243 and New York General Business Law Article 47 set rules for AI companions: say they are AI at the start and at least every three hours, notice talk of self-harm or suicide and point to crisis services, and do not use tricks that reward longer use. Hannah follows both. For what happens to your words, read the privacy policy.
